I wish it was that simple. The truth is that there is no magic number of days. The only way to beat an addiction is to learn to live a life without it, one that is even more fulfilling and satisfying. You have to find replacement activities and behaviors rather than simply not engaging in the addiction. When you take an addiction away, one that has consumed a large part of your life, there will be a big void. Think about all of the time you spend trying to fulfill your addiction, thinking about your addiction, engaging in your addiction, and recovering from your addiction. That is a lot of time! The best way to beat an addiction is to identify what you are really passionate about. Then, develop short-term and long-term goals and a plan to accomplish them. Get yourself busy on satisfying your personal wants and needs in a healthy manner! You need to pick activities that you can really embrace and be consumed by in a positive way.
Sure, the more time that goes by without engaging in your addiction, the better (but up until a point). People who have been abstinent for many months and even years often relapse. Why? Because they have not found any comparable replacement activities – comparable in the sense that they can compete with the addiction and be the types that you are even more enthusiastic and excited about engaging in than your addiction. In a sense, these activities will be more rewarding to you. The other piece of the puzzle is to identify what psychological functions the addiction has served for you and, again, find healthier ways to address these needs. For example, if you lack social and coping skills, and the addictive behavior seems to help you in the short-term socialize and deal with uncomfortable emotions, then you need to develop better social and coping skills! This is all easier said than done but I implore you to believe it can be accomplished. Many, many people have learned to live an addiction-free lifestyle by finding their passions and positive activities that really fulfill them as well as figuring out how to address their underlying psychological and emotional needs and difficulties in healthier ways. Don’t focus so much on counting days, focus on what you really want and need in life!
